Katsushika Hokusai
1760 - 1849
Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period, Japan's leading expert on Chinese painting. Hokusai is best-known as author of the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (c. 1831), created the both as a response to a domestic travel boom and as part of a personal fascination with Mount Fuji. His work has influenced many European artists, mainly Gauguin, Van Gogh and Claude Monet,and the 'Japonisme' mouvement. |
